Paintings exploring spaces of stillness filled with apparent movement.

Usually I’m a portrait artist focusing my attention on the person I’m painting.

However, for this show I have ventured within to paint portraits of characters,
elements, terrains, and the space in which they exist. These stand for ideas
and images that have manifested within the space of my mind.

I find when I focus on the elements in the paintings then thoughts arise
creating a story. There is a feeling of movement.

When I shift my focus to the space that exists in and around the elements
then I experience a feeling of absolute stillness.

It’s the same thing with my mind. I can be lost in thought or I can observe
my thoughts from a place of stillness.

My daily practice and challenge is to first come from this stillness in creating
a portrait whether it be from within or from without.
